I’m off to Smalls in New York without leaving my home in New Zealand

What a glorious day today and listening to a cool session at Smalls in New York at night while enjoying the sunshiny day here in Christchurch.

Smalls was created in 1993 by jazz impresario Mitch Borden, a former nurse and the son of an art-gallery owner. Read the rest and find the link here >>>>

Leaders Of NY Church Plead Guilty To Investment Fraud –

Matthew 6:32- 33
“For the pagans run after all these things, and your Heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

This is not the first time we have been reading about such matters lately. Perhaps this is another example of how careful one should be mixing church and business.

Two leaders of a Queens church have pleaded guilty to swindling members of the congregation out of $9.3 million.

Robert Riddle and Timothy Smith of the Local Christian Assembly Church face up to five years in federal prison for their roles in an investment scam.

Prosecutors in Brooklyn said Riddle urged elderly parishioners to mortgage their homes and put the money from the loans into an investment fund that Smith helped run.

Authorities said that the money was being used to buy clothing, vacations and cars including a $200,000 Bentley.

The church is located at 94-08 70 Avenue, Forest Hills, New York 11375.

Money can easily corrupt and in that sense these leaders are no exception when it comes to our tendency to greed. Some bible quotes popped in my mind:

No one can serve two masters. Either
he will hate the one and love the
other, or he will be devoted to one
and despise the other. You cannot
serve God and money.
Matthew 6:24

1 Timothy 6:9-10 (New King James Version)
“But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some had strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

Luke 12:15-21
Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man  produced a good crop. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’

“Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take
life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”

“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’

“This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God.”

Perhaps these people forgot about some of the words they have probably been teaching for many years.

Colossians 3:5
“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.”

Or maybe they just misunderstood 1 Timothy where it says:

1 Timothy 6:6
“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world and can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.”
