Malware in Mozilla add-ons found

What I so love about Mozilla Firefox is the collection of add-ons to expand functionality in virtually any sense.  However, this can also expose  users of the add-ons to a risk.  Earlier this week Mozilla disclosed that a pair of add-ons found at site included Trojans.

The two add-ons involved are Master Filer, a download manager and Version 4.0 of Sothink Web Video Downloader. Windows users that have downloaded and installed these add-ons would be affected by Malware that could potentially get a hold of their information. It is recommended by Mozilla that potentially impacted Windows users run an antivirus program. Just uninstalling the affected add-ons does not remove the Trojans.

In an article at E-security Planet we read

As to how a pair of infected add-ons ended up on Mozilla’s site, Mozilla faults its scanning tool.

“AMO performs a malware check on all add-ons uploaded to the site, and blocks add-ons that are detected as such,” Mozilla wrote in its advisory. “This scanning tool failed to detect the Trojan in Master Filer. Two additional malware detection tools have been added to the validation chain and all add-ons were rescanned, which revealed the additional Trojan in Version 4.0 of Sothink Web Video Downloader. No other instances of malware have been discovered.”

I guess this is all the more reason again to keep your security software updated.

Martin Luther King Jr Memorial: donate by seaching the net

The clock started ticking in the planned 20 month construction process of the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial. Those running the nonprofit in charge of raising money and building plan to open the four-acre site in late summer or early fall next year. The monument sits between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials on the Tidal Basin.

Alphi Phi Alphi, the fraternity to which King belonged, took responsibility for raising the projected $120 million to plan and build the memorial. It created the nonprofit Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation. The foundation’s website can be found at

Dr. Martin Luther King is remembered as a great orator whose impact on the nation came from the eloquence and inspirational quality of his words. His speeches, sermons and public addresses melded themes of democracy deeply embedded in the American conscience, and reinvigorated these messages with clear and insightful reflections on the true meaning of justice and equality. The entire memorial is meant to invoke the memory and spiritual presence of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through the visual experience of place, reinforced by the full range of sensory perception, the metaphorical use of water, stone and other landscape elements, the powerful display of passages from his sermons and speeches and the appearance of his physical image in the “Stone of Hope”.

Some quotes:

“There are two types of laws: there are just laws and there are unjust laws…What is the difference between the two?…An unjust law is a man-made code that is out of harmony with the moral law…Paul Tillich has said that sin is separation. Isn’t segregation an existential expression of man’s tragic separtion, an expression of his awful estrangement, his terrible sinfulness?”

– Martin Luther King, Jr., 1963

World peace through nonviolent means is neither absurd nor unattainable. All other methods have failed. Thus we must begin anew. Nonviolence is a good starting point. Those of us who believe in this method can be voices of reason, sanity, and understanding amid the voices of violence, hatred, and emotion. We can very well set a mood of peace out of which a system of peace can be built.

– Martin Luther King, Jr. December 1964

I Have a Dream

This historic speech could of course not be left out in this post.

Hackers expose weakness in trusted websites |

A powerful new type of internet attack works like a telephone tap, except operates between computers and websites they trust.

Hackers at the Black Hat and DefCon security conferences have revealed a serious flaw in the way web browsers weed out untrustworthy sites and block anybody from seeing them.

Ghostery blocks the sneaky spies

When you surf the net, and visit a website, there are a number of trackers that are keeping an eye on your behaviour. This is how for instance Google or Statcounter are able to create profiles of visitors. Firefox now has a plugin that prevents that and protects the privacy of users. The Ghostery plugin has been a useful addon to Firefox and recently version 2.0 was made available, which encompasses TrackerBlock. I am really happy with its smooth performance. Besides blocking 'web bugs' Ghostery also blocks advertisements, widgets and other trackers.

The release of TrackerBlock another step in obtaining a collection of tool to protect your privacy and manage your relation with Third  Party Advertisers, Behavioral Targeters and web analytics.

Or in the words of the site itself:

"Ghostery alerts you about the web bugs, ad networks and widgets on every page on the web.
Web bugs are hidden scripts that track your behavior and are used by the sites you visit to understand their own audience."

Ghostery 2.0 is can be downloaded at Mozilla Addons as well.
